If you have injured your mouth or are experiencing oral pain that will not go away, it is important to take the correct steps right away. Here are a few of the most common dental emergencies and what to do when they occur:
When a tooth is knocked out, it is possible for it to be saved and reinserted. First, locate the tooth. Once it is found, hold the tooth by its crown and rinse it with milk or cold water. If you can, reinsert the tooth into its socket and hold it in place by gently biting on a soft piece of fabric. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, hold it between your cheek and tongue or place it in a cup with your saliva or cold milk. Be sure to visit a dentist immediately.
- Chipped or Fractured Tooth
If your tooth is chipped and you can find the broken piece, place it in a cup with your saliva or milk until you can see the dentist. If the break was caused by a fall or trauma, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply an ice pack to the area. Contact your dentist right away.
If you are suffering from ongoing pain in one of your teeth, rinse your mouth with warm water and try to gently floss around the aching tooth to remove any food or debris. If the toothache continues, schedule an appointment with your dentist.
An infected cut or irritation in your mouth can swell and become filled with pus. If this pus cannot drain, an abscess will form. Abscesses can develop on the gums and even inside of teeth, and are typically very painful. If you notice a painful swelling near a tooth, contact your dentist right away or seek treatment at an emergency care center.

The acids that bacteria produce can wear away the enamel that protects teeth, causing cavities. Left untreated, cavities can lead to further tooth decay and ultimately the loss of the tooth.
This video features an in-depth look at cavities. A computer-generated animation is used to demonstrate the process of cavity formation. The development of plaque and the process of tooth decay are also explained. The clip emphasizes the importance of proper dental hygiene and care for the prevention of cavities.

If you’re looking for a way to correct crooked or crowded teeth, you may be wondering about the different types of braces that are available. The dentists at NYC Dental Center have the expertise to help you achieve a straighter smile with the Invisalign system. Here are just a few of its benefits:
- Less Noticeable Appearance
Invisalign straightens your teeth using a series of clear aligners that are nearly invisible, unlike traditional metal brackets. In addition, because Invisalign’s trays are removable, you won’t have to worry about food becoming lodged in your braces when you eat, a common problem with traditional wire braces.
Traditional braces require a significant amount of effort to keep clean, as wearers must carefully brush around each bracket and thread floss through the arch wire between each tooth. Keeping teeth clean and healthy is easier with Invisalign, as you can remove the trays to floss and brush teeth like normal. To keep Invisalign trays clean, you simply need to rinse and brush them whenever you brush your teeth.
- No Uncomfortable Wires or Brackets
Traditional braces utilize arch wires that are fed through the brackets on each tooth. Both the wires and the brackets can poke or rub against the gums and the inside of the cheeks, causing painful cuts and ulcers. Because Invisalign’s aligners are made out of a smooth plastic, patients who choose this option don’t have to worry about it irritating their gums or cheeks.
Traditional braces must be adjusted by an orthodontist on a regular basis. With Invisalign, you do not have to worry about frequent dental visits. Instead, you will be provided with your aligners at the beginning of your treatment, and when it is time for an “adjustment,” you simply move on to the next tray.
The Invisalign treatment process is one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to achieve a beautiful, perfectly-aligned smile. To learn more about Invisalign or to schedule a consultation, call NYC Dental Center today at (877) 672-2562. We service all of NYC, Queens, Midtown and Brooklyn.
