About the Root Canal Procedure

Last updated 11 months ago

If your dentist has recommended that you get a root canal, you may be wondering what is involved with the procedure. It's always a good idea to ask your dentist about the particulars of your specific treatment to make sure you understand what to expect. Here is a general overview of the root canal procedure:

Preparation

You'll need a little prep work before your root canal can begin. Your dentist will take x-rays to check the position of the cavity or damage in relation to the pulp and nerves. Then, your mouth will be prepped for the procedure, and you will receive numbing medicine to reduce any discomfort you may feel.

The Actual Root Canal

Your dentist will drill a hole in your tooth to access the pulp, which starts the actual root canal procedure. All the bacteria, infection, or damaged tissue, as well as the pulp that must be removed, is suctioned out through the hole. Some patients need antibiotic medication applied directly to the inside of their tooth to stop the spread of infection.

Capping

Depending on your personal situation, your dentist may use a temporary cap to cover the tooth until the infection is completely gone. Or, he or she may apply the permanent cap to the tooth during the initial appointment. In either case, the cap is installed to protect the tooth, provide a proper chewing surface, and to give you an appealing smile.

Pain

Despite what many people think, a root canal procedure isn't painful. Your dentist will use numbing creams and injections to prevent you from feeling any discomfort during the drilling. You may feel pressure, and you'll certainly hear the drill that the dentist uses, but you will not feel any pain. Afterward, you'll be given instructions on over-the-counter pain medication or a prescription for medicine.
